Volkswagen Overtakes Tesla to Become Europe’s Top Electric Car Seller - Carr.pk

Volkswagen has overtaken Tesla to become Europe’s biggest seller of electric vehicles, marking a major shift in the region’s fast-moving EV market.

Data published by Reuters shows the German carmaker sold more battery-electric cars than its US rival across Europe in 2025.

The milestone highlights how traditional automakers are catching up and, in some cases, pulling ahead as demand patterns change.

Sales surge lifts Volkswagen ahead

Volkswagen boosted its European electric vehicle sales by around 56 percent in 2025, reaching roughly 274,000 units.

Strong demand for models such as the ID.7 and a wider range of competitively priced EVs helped drive growth across key markets, including Germany and the UK.

In contrast, Tesla saw its European EV sales fall by about 27 percent to around 236,000 vehicles.

Analysts point to slowing demand, tougher competition, and a lineup that has seen fewer major updates in recent years.

Competition reshapes the EV market

European consumers now face more choice than ever as legacy brands expand their electric offerings and new players enter the market.

Volkswagen’s broad portfolio and local manufacturing footprint have given it an edge, while Tesla continues to face pressure from both European and Chinese rivals.

The shift follows another setback for Tesla, which lost its global EV sales crown to China’s BYD last year.

For now, Volkswagen’s rise signals a turning point in Europe’s electric car race and a clear message that the EV market is no longer a one-horse show.
