Xiaomi SU7 Under Scrutiny Once More After Recent Accident
A serious accident involving a newly delivered Xiaomi SU7 Max took place on the afternoon of December 15 at Xiaomi’s delivery center in Hangzhou, China. The incident occurred inside the facility before the car even made it onto the roads, resulting in a bystander being struck and hospitalized.
What Happened?
According to a report by CarNewsChina, the accident happened while the driver was reversing in a narrow passage.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the car reversing slowly at first, followed by a sudden, sharp acceleration. The left front wheel struck a man standing nearby, knocking him to the ground.
Bystanders and staff immediately rushed to help, performing CPR until emergency responders arrived. The victim, identified as an employee surnamed Xia, was rushed to the hospital. While the Hangzhou Traffic Police confirmed the accident, they have not released specific details on his condition due to the ongoing legal investigation.
People on the internet criticized the car’s ADAS system for not applying the auto-brakes. Following this criticism, a Xiaomi source clarified that the car was not using any ADAS system at the time; it was under manual control. The source stated that the driver made a critical error by mistaking the accelerator for the brake pedal.
A History of Safety Concerns
This is not the first time the Xiaomi SU7 has been in the headlines for safety-related incidents. This electric sedan has faced scrutiny over multiple accidents.
Earlier this year, a Xiaomi SU7 caught fire following a severe crash, raising questions about battery safety. In another separate incident back in May, a SU7 was reported to have caught fire, further fueling concerns.
While the car has been praised for its tech and performance, this string of incidents, from fires to delivery center mishaps, has kept the spotlight on Xiaomi’s first EV for controversial reasons as well.
