Green Line Phase 2 Set to Resume Next Week
Work on the Green Line Phase 2 in Karachi is set to resume after Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited (PIDCL) officials met Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Friday. The meeting addressed key concerns raised by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) regarding the stalled project.
A delegation including PIDCL officials and federal government spokesperson for Sindh affairs, Barrister Raja Khaliq uz Zaman Ansari, briefed Mayor Wahab on the revised plan. The mayor confirmed that construction would restart immediately and be completed within one year.
Officials said the 1.8-kilometre stretch from Numaish Chowrangi to Municipal Park (Jama Cloth) will feature three new bus stations. A Traffic Signal Priority (TSP) system will be installed to give buses priority at traffic lights, ensuring faster and smoother travel for commuters.
The KMC, supported by the PPP-led Sindh government, had halted the federally funded multi-billion-rupee project in September because PIDCL did not secure a no-objection certificate (NOC) from municipal authorities before starting construction. Karachi’s city officials had insisted that all urban development projects must be approved by the municipal government.
Mayor Wahab and Barrister Raja Ansari are expected to officially announce the start of construction next week.
The Green Line project, first launched in February 2016 under former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was initially planned to be completed in a year at a cost of Rs. 16.85 billion. However, it was only partially finished by January 2022 after six years, with expenses rising to Rs. 35 billion.

During its early operation, the Green Line’s 80 buses carried around six million passengers in the first six months. Currently, it serves about 80,000 passengers daily. Once the second phase from Numaish to Municipal Park is completed, ridership is expected to grow to 135,000 passengers per day.
The first phase of the Green Line runs from Surjani Town to Numaish, while the second phase will extend it to Municipal Park along M.A. Jinnah Road, improving travel for Karachi residents.
