Karachi Launches Rs. 3 Billion Smart Traffic Signal Project
The city is set to introduce smart traffic signals as part of a major upgrade to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
The plan was shared by DIG Traffic Karachi Peer Muhammad Shah during a briefing at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday.
According to officials, the newly formed Karachi Traffic Management Company will oversee traffic engineering and supervise all improvements. The installation of smart traffic signals is the most significant step, with each unit costing around Rs. 7.5 million. Karachi will require about 400 signals, bringing the total investment to nearly Rs. 3 billion.
DIG Shah said the upgraded signals will help manage vehicle movement more efficiently and reduce bottlenecks on busy routes. He also highlighted that the city’s e-challan system is already delivering results, noting that monthly traffic accidents have declined from 96 to 46 since digital enforcement began.
