Murree Glass Train Project to Link Islamabad Airport for Faster Travel
The Murree glass train project is set to get a major boost as Punjab government officials plan to link it with Islamabad International Airport (IIA) via Faizabad. This connection is expected to make travel between the capital and Murree faster and more convenient for tourists, public commuters, and foreign visitors.
The Punjab government is preparing to launch the project from near Lake View Park and the Bhara Kahu bypass. According to the feasibility study, the project will have a 40-kilometer track stretching from Bhara Kahu bypass to Pindi Point in Murree, with most of it elevated to adapt to the hilly terrain.
A Punjab government team, led by Chief Minister’s Adviser Shahid Ashraf Tarar, recently met with CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa to discuss linking the project with Islamabad airport.
Nespak, the government’s consultant, shared a pre-feasibility study recommending a 13-kilometer track from Faizabad to near Bhara Kahu bypass, connecting with the main station near Lake View Park.
Officials noted that CDA’s existing metro track from the airport to Faizabad could be used to integrate the new elevated monorail system. In the next phase, a track could also be built from Rawat to Faizabad via the Expressway, further expanding connectivity.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has emphasized starting the glass train project soon. Authorities say the hilly terrain of Murree is suitable for such a rail link, citing the historical British-era rail connection to Shimla, India, built at a similar altitude of over 2,200 meters.
The government hopes this project will significantly improve accessibility to Murree while offering a modern travel option for visitors. CDA will now commission a detailed feasibility study based on Nespak’s pre-feasibility report before moving forward.
