How a Bogie Shortage Is Bringing Pakistan Railways to a Standstill? - Carr.pk

Pakistan Railways is facing a severe bogie shortage, leaving train operations heavily disrupted across the country. Railway officials report that the system currently lacks 385 bogies, affecting the smooth running of trains.

Due to the shortage, many trains are operating with short formations, while 45 bogies have been removed from various train rakes to keep services running. Shockingly, 135 bogies are being used on tracks without annual maintenance, raising concerns over passenger safety.

In Lahore and Karachi, additional rakes of 34 bogies each have been withdrawn, leaving only 24 spare bogies of different categories in the railway system. Meanwhile, 503 bogies remain in workshops awaiting repair, delayed due to lack of funds, missing policies, and frequent administrative transfers.

The core issue causing Pakistan Railways’ operational standstill is a severe lack of functional bogies and rolling stock, primarily due to an aging fleet. This crisis is worsened by long-term problems like chronic under-investment, financial difficulties hindering maintenance and new purchases, and systemic mismanagement, collectively preventing the effective modernization and upkeep of its fleet.

Railway authorities say that at least 1,464 bogies are needed for proper train operations, but currently only 1,079 functional bogies are available. This shortage is severely affecting daily train departures, punctuality, and passenger capacity. Officials urge immediate repairs and procurement of new bogies to restore normal operations.
