Punjab Introduces AI ‘Talk to Camera’ System Aims to Revolutionize Road Safety  - Carr.pk

The Punjab Safe City Authority (PSCA) has expanded its AI-powered ‘Talk to Camera’ monitoring system across major cities in Punjab, following successful trials in Lahore and Sheikhupura.

This initiative is part of the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to detect and address road safety hazards, such as open manholes, overflowing dumps, and visible smoke, with a focus on improving safety for pedestrians, motorcyclists, and commuters, especially following the tragic incidents in Karachi and Lodhran.

How the ‘Talk to Camera’ System Works

Developed under CM’s safe Punjab vision, the system allows authorities to interact with the CCTV network using natural language. This capability enables them to detect real-time safety hazards such as open manholes, overflowing dumps, and visible smoke. These hazards are a serious concern, especially after the tragic deaths of children in Karachi and Lodhran, who fell into open manholes. The AI system aims to prevent similar accidents by providing quick identification and alerts for immediate response.

Impact on Road Safety for Pedestrians and Motorcyclists

The system’s deployment is expected to have a significant impact on road safety for pedestrians, motorcyclists, and commuters. With AI algorithms scanning thousands of cameras across the cities, authorities can act swiftly to address risks before they lead to accidents. This AI-driven technology helps monitor roads more effectively, allowing officials to make quicker decisions and implement preventive measures in urban and suburban areas.

A Step Toward Smart Cities and Safer Roads

Since its pilot implementation, the system has already demonstrated its potential to respond rapidly to safety threats, improving road safety significantly.

The PSCA views the ‘Talk to Camera’ system as a major advancement in smart surveillance and public safety. It underscores the provincial government’s commitment to creating smarter cities and ensuring safer roads for all.

While the system is operational in major cities across Punjab, it raises the question: When will cities like Karachi adopt similar systems to tackle public safety issues like open manholes and road hazards?
