Yango and InDrive Free on Basant as Announced by Maryam Nawaz? Social Media Reality Check
Lahore residents expecting free rides from Yango and inDrive during the Basant festival have expressed disappointment, claiming the promised initiative did not materialize. The Punjab government had announced that ride-hailing services would provide 60,000 free rides over three days, from 6 to 8 February, as part of a broader transportation plan for the festival.
Despite official announcements, commuters reported that only Metrobus and Orange Line Metro Train rides were free, while ride-hailing apps showed no free-ride options. Social media users and app users criticized the scheme as misleading or poorly implemented, with one user stating, “Today is 6 Feb, but there are no free rides on Yango or inDrive. Announcements are easy, implementation is needed.” Another user complained, “My ride that normally costs Rs. 150 was charged Rs. 450.”
Authorities had planned extensive transport support, including 228 feeder buses, 64 Metrobus buses, 54 college buses, 73 university buses, and private-sector rickshaws. However, the lack of coordination with ride-hailing services has caused frustration among residents, undermining the government’s aim of smooth and stress-free Basant travel.

The mismatch between official claims and public experience raises questions about planning, monitoring, and accountability, leaving citizens skeptical about the effectiveness of such festival transportation announcements.
